UAW And Unifor Contracts Compared By Labor Experts

Recently, the UAW and Unifor negotiated new contracts with General Motors (GM) that will affect tens of thousands of workers. While the details of each contract are different, labor experts say both agreements represent significant wins for workers.
The UAW contract, for example, includes wage increases, improved healthcare benefits, and a commitment from GM to invest billions of dollars in U.S. manufacturing facilities. The contract also includes a new path to permanent employment for temporary workers and a commitment to create jobs for workers who were laid off when GM closed factories in Ohio and Maryland.
Meanwhile, the Unifor contract includes wage increases, improvements to pensions and benefits, and a commitment from GM to invest in Canadian manufacturing facilities. The contract also includes a plan to convert a factory in Ontario into an electric vehicle assembly plant and a commitment to create jobs for workers who were laid off when a plant in Ontario closed last year.
Despite the similarities between the contracts, there are some differences between the UAW and Unifor agreements. For example, the UAW contract includes a provision that allows the union to block GM from importing vehicles from other countries, while the Unifor contract includes a commitment from GM to maintain production at a factory in Ontario.
Overall, labor experts say these contracts demonstrate the strength of organized labor in the automotive industry. By negotiating collectively, workers are able to secure better wages, benefits, and working conditions, while also ensuring that their employers invest in the communities where they operate.
