Kyle Vogt, the co-founder and CEO of Cruise, a self-driving car startup owned by General Motors, has announced his resignation from the company. Vogt, who will transition from CEO to the role of chief technology officer, will be replaced by Dan Ammann, president of GM, effective January 1, 2020.

Vogt co-founded Cruise in 2013, and the company was acquired by GM in 2016 to accelerate its self-driving technology efforts. Under Vogt's leadership, Cruise has rapidly expanded its operations in San Francisco and is developing self-driving cars for ride-hailing services.

In a statement, Vogt said, "I'm proud of what we've accomplished at Cruise over the last six years, and I'm excited to take on the role of CTO." He also expressed confidence in Ammann's ability to lead the company, stating that "Dan is the right person to guide Cruise through the next phase of its journey."

Ammann, who will maintain his current role as GM president, said, "We're grateful for Kyle's leadership and vision in building Cruise into a recognized leader in self-driving technology. I am honored to join the Cruise team at this important time in the company's history."

The leadership shakeup comes as Cruise prepares to launch its autonomous ride-hailing service to the public in San Francisco. While the company has yet to announce a specific launch date, Ammann has said that the service will be launched in "a matter of quarters, not years."
